Why Libya?
"For so long maligned by a myopic Western media as a pariah state at odds with the world, Libya surprises almost everyone who visits the country.
For most people who haven't visited, Libya means Colonel Gaddafi and Lockerbie. For those who've spent any time here, the friendliness and hospitality of the Libyan people are likely to be their most enduring memories, alongside a wealth of superb sites.
Forget the myths about Libyan hostility to the outside world; most Libyans make a mockery of the stereotype, with their generosity and willingness to engage with the peoples of the world.
The fact that tourism is a relatively new industry in Libya has not stopped the Libyan people from catching on fast! Buoyed by the recent lifting of the travel embargo (October 2002) by both the USA and the EU, Libya has fast become a very sought after tourism destination.
Tourism in Libya is constantly evolving but careful planing is required for every visit.
Visa regulations change frequently and, at this time, a journey to Libya has to be part of a government sanctioned group tour, ostensibly to minimize tourism's impact upon what was for years a quit isolated society - history has taught Libya to be wary of foreign invasions. That said, the adaptable Libyans permit a significant degree of flexibility to enable you to get the best from this mysterious and rewarding country.
Despite its modern facilities, Libya has preserved something of an old-world quality (there are no hustlers). It is quite possibly the last unspoiled outpost in North Africa. Whether you're a desert enthusiast or an aficionado of the ancient world, now is the perfect time to visit Libya.
The Libyans and I welcome you to this exciting and historical adventure. With this in mind, I strongly recommend (and insist) that you all purchase and read the following books in preparation for the Libya adventure. - Lonely Planet Guide to Libya. - Sahara by Michael Palin. St. Martins Press (2002). Pages 210-226. - And, the magazine articles mentioned on the Libya web site. We need to be prepared for this one.
And, guess what?
For all my Cuba traveling clients, this one is fully legal. Feel free to call me directly for any questions or inquiries.
