Biography of J. J. Pringle
J. J. Pringle was born on September 2, 1824,
in Charleston, South Carolina.
He attended school in England and the U.S. Naval Academy
at Annapolis in
1846. During the War between the States, he stayed in
Europe. His first
session pursuing Snipe on his South Louisiana plantations
was 1867-68. During
the following 20 sessions, he recorded 78,602 Snipe to
his own gun
(shooting). His book, "Twenty Years Snipe Shooting"
is the only known record
of such accomplishments. It was originally published in
1899 and was
reprinted by Sand Lake Press in 1988. The book is a historical
gunning
record of one man's pursuit of what he considered the
most challenging bird.
When considered "in-context," that is using
mule drawn wagons through the
muck of South Louisiana, the clothing and footwear of
the day, none of which
was waterproof, and the sheer number of birds shot on
a daily basis,
Pringle's career is unique in the shooting field. His
accomplishments are
known by few, but that can never diminish the magnitude
of his skill and
dedication. He is a man worth remembering, and the Snipe
is a bird worth
honoring.

Any birds shot within that distance will be deducted from
the Gunners' card.
General:
1. Any disputes will be presided over by the shoot committee.
2. There will be four shooting sessions. Each of the two

3. Serious retrieval efforts must be made on each bird
knocked down.

of one bird per

with an empty
